March 10th through the 14th will be Civics 4 All Week at WJPS, and a variety of events are planned for each day.
Prior to the week itself, there was a “What does civics mean to me?” poster contest.
On the first day, there will be two large graffiti papers prepared for students to write about what civics means to them and what civics is.
The next day, there will be an assembly during periods two and three with speakers including the Whitestone Civics Association and City Council Member Vickie Paladino. Additionally, there will be a Q&A, trivia contest, and an announcement of the winner of the poster contest.
On Wednesday and Thursday, students will be delivering soapbox speeches while classes will gather to watch.
Finally on Friday, March 14th, students will revisit the graffiti paper and there will be a voting event about everyone’s favorite candy.
WJPS paraprofessional Ms. Kimberly said that an additional activity could be “something for the community to help our kids and parents to be more involved.”
WJPS seventh grader Joseph O’dell said, “Teaching civics is important because it teaches students about the real world and how to prepare for it.”
