Recently, there was a bus crash in Bellerose Manor in Queens on icy roads, injuring 10 people, 7 of whom were children, according to an NYPD report. It is clear that it is time for the Department of Education (DOE) to start issuing more snow days to prevent this.
So far in the 2024-25 school year, there have been no ‘snow days’, never having to stay home for remote learning because of the elements. The DOE’s reluctance to issue snow days may have stemmed from the technical problems that arose from the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, schools are well-adjusted now and can have remote learning days if the weather demands it. Doing so reduces the danger that students and staff face when they go outside in winter weather.
In the past, the DOE was able to issue more snow days since remote learning was not something that was experienced in mass amounts. It is time that we go back to times before COVID-19 and have more snow days.
WJPS 12th grader Ishal Ahmad said, “We need more snow days because I feel like staying home on these days is more convenient for students like myself and parents who drive them.”
WJPS 12th grader Erica Lin said, “I feel like there aren’t enough days with snow to have more snow days.”
