As we move into the last month of winter the weather begins to change, but the possibility of snow still stands.
Students who have to ride public transportation to school could be late because buses may run on a different schedule.
An alternative would be for The New York City Department of Education to consider remote learning during colder months to help everyone avoid getting sick. Furthermore, students are more likely to be on time online since they are learning from home.
According to The New York City Department of Homeless Services, a code blue is issued when temperatures drop below 32 degrees. Shelters remain open during the day. If this is the case, schools should be remote when a code blue is issued.
WJPS 11th grader Eleni Tsiakas said, “I think that students should get the option to go into school or do online learning, but personally I prefer in person as it’s much easier to understand the work and get the help if needed.”
WJPS 11th grader Valery Cardona Calderon stated, “I think we should have remote learning during the winter because the weather can affect the way students feel and do in school. If we do remote learning, students won’t deal with the cold and can do better academically.”
In conclusion, there should be a survey for students and staff of the DOE to determine whether there should be remote days during the winter.
