The Selective Service Act should be taken down because there no longer is a threat to the US that the Selective Service Act can solve. The military is so advanced that we don’t need more people to serve if a war were to break out.
The Selective Service Act also known as the selective training and service act is a law that was passed in 1917 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which allowed the government to increase the military whenever it decided that it needed more for national security. The government does this by selecting citizens who have registered to join the armed forces.
The draft was used in a time period where our ability to defend America depended on people in the armed forces. With all the new inventions created every day, the ability to defend the country now relies on our technology.
The United States also has one of the largest militaries in the world, which is why it is called the “World Police.” With this many people already serving and all the new technologies coming out, the draft is no longer needed.
WJPS 11th grader Nicholas Zubovic said, “I think the draft should still be in place because the US might need people during war.”
WJPS 11th grader Joseph Weir said, “I think the draft should be taken away because it is not fair to be forced to serve during war.”
