Starting in summer 2025, the MTA plans to increase its train and bus fares by four percent. This increase will take current bus and train fares of $2.90 to $3.00, which is an unnecessary increase and a bad move by the MTA.
Almost two years ago the MTA raised bus and train fares from $2.75 to $2.90. Many people were upset at the inflated fares, now this coming August they will have a new reason to be agitated.
This plan was part of the 19.9 billion dollar budget that was approved by the MTA board` last month. The MTA fares have been steadily increasing by four percent ever since 2009.
WJPS 12th grader Maya Guadarrama said, “I honestly think that raising fares on buses and trains isn’t a great idea because there are many people who work in different places which require to pay for the fares multiple times depending on where they work.”
WJPS 12th grader Vanessa Arellano added on with, “It hasn’t even been two years since they raised the fares to $2.90, raising it again will cause more people to not take the bus and also the train.”
