Recently, some changes have been made to the rules of high school wrestling. This was done to mimic a similar rule in college wrestling made in 2023-2024.
The changes made are takedowns are worth three points rather than getting two points from a takedown. This was done to encourage wrestlers to be on the offensive rather than staying on the defensive.
Wrestlers win by building a lead of more than 15 points, awarding the team five points.
Winning by pinning the opponent to the ground, awards the team six points.
By changing the points that a wrestler receives from a takedown from two to three points, this makes matches occur too quickly. Matches take up to six minutes, made up of three periods of two minutes, and could be longer if the score is tied.
The bottom line is that this rule change should be reversed.
WJPS 11th grader Noah Lim said, “I like the change to the point system because it makes it easier for me to win.”
WJPS 11th grader Nicholas Zubovic said, “The rule changes make it more entertaining to watch.”
