The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may ban an artificial dye called Red No. 3 from food and medicine. They should ban it because it is harmful.
According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a non-profit watchdog, evidence has shown since the 1980s that Red No. 3 causes thyroid cancer in animals.
Upon being told this, WJPS 12th grader Lydia Kraljic said, “Yes because if it harms an animal, it can harm a person.”
Additionally, a report released by the state of California links the dye to hyperactivity in some children.
The FDA does not allow it in makeup, or in externally applied drugs like creams and lotions. According to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Red No. 3 is still in baby food, cookies, soda, and juice
This raises a question: Should there be a cancer-causing and behavior-impacting chemical still legally allowed in American foods and beverages, including some regularly eaten by children? The best way to answer that question is that no matter what the reason is, it shouldn’t be there.
WJPS teacher Mr. Mengani said, “I guess overall, we should pay more attention to the ingredients in our food.”
