With the 2024 Presidential election having ended, Americans elected Donald Trump to a second term. However, some voters have been having trouble with the system we use to elect the President, the Electoral College.
The Electoral College has been used since the first presidential election in 1787. It was made as a compromise between people and Congressmen electing the President.
We should get rid of the Electoral College and use the national popular vote instead.
The Electoral College raises many problems. First, the President elected might not be the winner of the majority of the popular vote. This has happened two times in US history: in 2000 and 2016.
Another problem with the Electoral College is that it gives more power to people living in small states.
WJPS teacher Mr. Mengani said, “The Electoral College is complicated and not a lot of people understand it; abolishing the electoral college would get more people to vote, though the disadvantages of abolishing the electoral college is that candidates could ignore some states and favor urban areas.”
WJPS 12th grader Vanessa Arellano said, “Popular votes should be the system we use for deciding the president because it shows the whole population of people who voted.”
