If you participate in subway surfing, you may get injured or killed while doing it.
According to ABC News, an incident in October resulted in a 13-year-old girl dying and a 12- year-old suffering a head injury. That was the sixth subway surfing-related death in 2024 so far, which is up from five in 2023.
In addition to its safety risks, subway surfing, or any other form of riding outside or between subway cars, is illegal under New York state law. The fine for doing so is 75 dollars.
Government attempts to prevent it include the use of drones by the NYPD and the “Ride Inside, Stay Alive” campaign, according to NYC.gov.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams claims that drone and field response teams have found and removed 114 people from subway car roofs, with the average age of these riders being 14 years old.
Camryn Chan, a 12th grader at WJPS, recommended “guards at every single inch of the subway.” when asked what to do in response to subway surfing.
Aliki Maria, a WJPS seventh grader, said, “When you’re thinking about it, think again.”
