It has been nearly three months into the new school year, and AP pre-calculus students are without calculators.
WJPS pre-calculus teacher Mr. Lai said, “I just don’t want students to steal them or break them like they’ve done in the past. We use the Desmos graphing calculator online in class because that’s what will be available for the AP test.”
Mr. Lai had added that for this level of math, he believes everyone should have their own calculators.
Students have taken their first test strictly without them. For future tests, however, calculators will be needed.
With the lack of physical calculators, students have been using the Desmos graphing calculator on school computers to follow along with the lessons and to do homework.
Before school started, it was requested that students have their own calculators for class on the pre-calculus supplies list.
WJPS 11th grader Daniela Vicente said, “I think that the Desmos calculator makes it easier to follow along during the lessons and homework. I don’t have my own calculator at home, so I’m glad that I can use Desmos so I can still do my homework efficiently.”
