Nowadays in 2024, The idea of wildlife and pets in classrooms is limited. Many classroom settings in elementary schools used to have pets like hamsters or turtles.
However, with the issue of students being allergic to certain animals or the fur on animals, classroom pets are just not seen as much anymore. Taking care of classroom pets also comes with expenses that some schools may not want to pay.
WJPS 11th grader Jamie Bauman said, “I think it’s fun but it will probably be distracting to some kids.”
WJPS 11th grader Andrew Montavalo said, “The idea of having a classroom pet in elementary school was fun, but I don’t know about having them in high school.”
According to Western Governors University, having a classroom pet is a great way to enhance the classroom and improve student learning.
