The 2024-25 school year is in session and some 12th graders in WJPS are taking four Advanced Placement (AP) classes: AP Macroeconomics, AP Computer Science Principles, AP English Literature and Composition, and AP Environmental Science.
While taking AP classes is beneficial because it provides students with college credits, taking four AP classes may be stressful to some students and may impact their mental health negatively. On top of that, in order to receive college credit students need to receive a three, four, or five on the AP exam.
According to Trevor Packer, the head of the AP program, he stated on X, “Our research shows that students often maximize AP’s benefits by taking 1-2 AP courses per year in grades 10-12.”
Since some students are taking four AP classes in their school year it means they’ll have to take four AP tests in one month.
WJPS 12th grader Aisha Ismail said, “It’s way too much work for seniors because we have resumes and college applications to worry about.”
WJPS teacher Ms. Marks stated, “Some students are put into too many AP’s which can be harmful because there is no screening process.”
