As the new school year has started it means a new wrestling season starts too. The season starts in the winter, but the training starts now.
The body of a wrestler has to meet the standards, and they have to make the weight of the class they are in. If not, they can’t participate.
A coach may ask a wrestler to drop or gain in weight if they need you too, to have a full participating roster. To lose weight wrestlers can exercise more and/or eat less/healthier.
WJPS 12th grader Andre Gordon stated, “It’s exhausting, it’s not like any other sport. It’s a mental battle not eating and being in the shape you have to and it feels really draining. In Francis Lewis tryouts they have you run around the whole perimeter of the school for an hour and run the stairs for an hour as well. This is so they know how fit you are.”
WJPS 11th Grader Noah Lim stated, “I wrestle at my weight, but to people that can’t eat to cut weight, it is very stressful, hard, and it takes discipline.”
