A YouTuber known as ChromaLock has modified a TI-84 Plus calculator to include features such as WiFi access and ChatGPT in a video titled “I Made The Ultimate Cheating Device.”
These changes are not easy to see and may be capable of going unnoticed even in schools with existing anti-cheating rules.
The influencer has stated that he does not support “academic dishonesty” and claims to have made the video for educational purposes.
The modification created for the video has other listed uses beyond AI as well, such as making menus bigger, displaying color pictures, and even basic internet browsing. ChromaLock has teased some custom apps he is working on, including a camera app.
This comes at a time when concerns about ChatGPT and other AI large language models (LLMs) in schools have increased, with some school districts banning them and others, including the New York City Department of Education, looking for ways to incorporate them into the classroom.
WJPS 12th grader Alexa Llenas said, “I find it impressive because I didn’t even know that was possible or it could be achieved.”
WJPS eighth grader Seyed Nezami was worried, and said,“Maybe they could use it to cheat.”
