Six and a half years after its announcement, Black Myth: Wukong was released on August 14th. It is a fighting adventure video game made by Game Science, a Chinese developing company.
Within a few days of its release, it broke the Steam single-player concurrent player record, surpassing the likes of the games “Elden Ring”, and “Palworld”, two games that amassed a large fandom.
Black Myth: Wukong takes aspects of the novel “Journey to the West,” which is about the journey of a Buddhist monk and an immortal monkey. Sun Wukong, the monkey the game is centered on, is born from stone who gained power through Taoism practices and defied the Heavens.
This mythology is prevalent in the game, with the main character of the game being a monkey called “The Destined One,” who is to collect the six fragments of Sun Wukong’s senses, to bring him back to life.
WJPS 11th grader Nikola Zubovich stated, “The game was very fun, although hard. It’s definitely an amazing game, and I’ve been playing this game ever since it was released.”
WJPS Teacher Mr. Van Deurs stated, “I’ve heard it’s very combat-oriented and less exploration, which I’m fine with, but I still would like exploration. I also heard some parts of the game are not optimized, which I dislike.”
