WJPS’s new technology policy has been enforced on all students; however, there are some concerns regarding the policy.
For example, if a student gets caught with their phones, they immediately get confiscated and will only be picked up by a parent during school hours.
The current hours for cellphone pickup are 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM. This new rule can be immensely inconvenient for parents because most parents work during school hours.
Additionally, this new policy can be an issue for the majority of students who take public transportation. The enforcement of prohibiting phones during lunch has developed some issues.
WJPS 11th grader Panagiota Sfeliniotis said, “I think the phone policy, while being a bit excessive, can be beneficial towards students’ education. However, I don’t see how restricting phones at lunch is helping us with our studies. We should be allowed some down time, like at lunch, to be on our phones.”
WJPS guidance counselor Ms. McCloskey stated, “I think the cell phone policy is in the best interest for students because it allows students to focus on their schoolwork and not be distracted by social media.”
A solution to this issue would be extending the school hours to pick up cellphones and allowing students to access their phones only during lunch.
