With the new school year, there have been some new rules about cell phones that are being enforced in WJPS and some students are not too happy with it.
Previously cell phones would have been taken away by teachers and/or administrators, then returned at the end of class or even the end of the school day.
According to the email received from NYC public schools, if cell phones are seen being used in class, during lunch, or in hallways an administrator will take it and will only return it to the parent or guardian. Parents or guardians will only be allowed to come in during school hours to have their child’s phone returned, repeated offenses would result in phone being taken for up to 24 hours, and longer upon further offenses.
WJPS 12th grader Camryn Chan said, “I think it’s unnecessary and unfair for people who don’t get picked up by a parent or guardian.”
WJPS principal Mr. Yarmy said, “I think that I’m really looking forward to the positive effect on students’ behavior and academic performance.”
