For years, these cats have been living on the top of a hill above a railroad on Union Street in Flushing. From black to calico, there are a variety of cats that somehow manage to end up in their small “community.”
Over the years, many of the locals of Main Street have shown their support for the cats as they consistently give them food, water and even built them small homes for them to hide in case of bad weather. Their homes are labeled “Cat Condos.” They are made out of crates and have wooden planks to serve as the rooftops.
These cats have garnered multiple names including “The Railroad Cats.“
Some people have even tried to claim the cats as their own, going as far as attempting to shelter the cats and adopting them in the process.
WJPS 10th grader, Karen Olivera, said, “I’ve been to Main Street a couple of times and have seen them occasionally. They’re there for most of the time. They never show up in rainy weather though.“
WJPS 11th grader, Aisha Ismail, said, “ I don’t live anywhere near Main Street, however I have heard of the ‘Main Street cats’ before.“
