Are you an early bird or a later riser?
Early birds may seem like the most productive and waking up earlier allows more time in the day for you to do things, but you are the most groggy in the morning?
Waking up later makes you feel fresh, but lose a couple more hours of the day. However, what’s best for school?
We need to start school later than the current 8:05 start time of our school.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “The American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later to give students the opportunity to get the amount of sleep they need.”
So should we start school later and in turn wake up later?
WJPS senior, Kanella Dalistouris stated, “I wake up around 6:30, but I don’t think school should start later because I don’t think I’ll get any extra sleep anyways because now I would have to take the bus instead of driving.”
WJPS senior, Nicholas Persaud said, “If it’s 8:30 it doesn’t make a difference, maybe if it started even later, I could wake up rested and not get up at six.”
This raises an important opinion: how late should school start for students to truly get the sleep they need?
We need to start at nine o’clock or 9:30, so the time is late enough for commuters as well as those who live close by.
However, the common consensus is anything but 8:05am.
