Large Cities, Nearing a Second Atlantis?

Large+Cities%2C+Nearing+a+Second+Atlantis%3F

As the years pass, the global temperature rises continuously. From this, water levels have risen and several cities have been filled with floods.

Why have these floods been happening so frequently? The Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center speculates that it is due to the mass of the buildings in urban areas such as New York and the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta.

According to an author on the New York Study, Steven D’Hondt, satellites are being used to measure the subsidence rates in almost 100 cities near coastal areas. Afterwards, he stated that if the subsidence were ever to continue, then several cities will meet even more catastrophic floods.

Right now, there have only been two solutions made to prevent the flooding from getting worse. The first of these being to halt making more buildings and the second being to halt the extraction of groundwater.

WJPS senior Francesca Ljubicic stated, “I hope people will start listening more about the causes of this problem, and will try to stop what they are doing that causes it.”

WJPS senior Thekli Chronis said, “I hope people can work together as a team and fix the cause of the problem. We need to protect our environment and keep it clean and any urban issues should be fixed.”
