Since daylight saving time ended and time was set back an hour, the nights get longer until the winter solstice passes. Low visibility may lead to an increase of traffic accidents at night.
According to nyc.gov, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the return of the “Dusk and Darkness” program to promote road safety at night and raise people’s vigilance to ensure fewer car accidents. “This year, the Dusk and Darkness campaign will focus on promoting safe practices for the carting of commercial waste — handled by private companies — to protect workers and other road users.”
Launched in 2016, this is the seventh year of Dusk and Darkness, a program that aims to combine effective strategies to make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians at night.
Initiatives for this year include enforcement by the New York Police Department on local streets and highways during the evening and overnight, prioritizing cyclists and pedestrians crossing, and encouraging a 25 miles-per-hour speed limit.
WJPS paraprofessional Ms. Salcedo said, “I think this program will save many lives, because statistics show that there will be more accidents during the night. It will let people be more aware during night times, especially on highways where there are high speeds.”
Eleni Melissinos, WJPS freshman stated, “I think this program can help drivers be more aware and can help decrease the amount of accidents at night.”
