National Honor Society

National+Honor+Society

By: Tiffany Zhang, Community Reporter

The National Honor Society chapter at WJPS, which was started by the founding principal, Ms. Schneider, is the student organization that upholds values of leadership, character, service, and scholarship. Members are required to partake in 20 hours of community service within or outside of school.

Community service hours can be earned at places such as religious organizations, Queens Public Library, YMCA, soup kitchens, Alley Pond Park, and animal shelters.

Students in the 10th and 11th grade can join the National Honor Society if they have a GPA of 90 or above and the membership lasts until graduation.

Here are some insights on how members were impacted with their involvement in the National Honor Society.

WJPS junior Katelyn Viglietta said, “It has made me do more community service hours and try new things. Also it has gotten me more involved in school.”

WJPS junior Sophia Turner said, “It has also made me more involved in affairs outside of the school because I took on a community service job in order to complete my required hours. Even though I took on the job for the National Honor Society, it ended up being very emotionally rewarding.”
