Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, purchased Twitter for $45 billion last week and has started to tweet out ideas he wants to implement, one of them being to charge companies and government twitter users a small fee to use the social platform.
On Twitter, Musk said, “Twitter will always be free for casual users, but maybe a slight cost for commercial/government users”, following it up with, “Ultimately, the downfall of the Freemasons was giving away their stone cutting services for nothing.”
Charging companies and the government could lead to another way for Twitter to earn profit as Musk begins the change for the company to become private, removing them from the stock market.
The idea of this small fee would not affect individuals, as he would keep Twitter free since he aims to maintain his purpose of giving the public their free speech on the platform.
Samuel Park, a senior at WJPS, said, “It is a big idea from Elon because of the major companies and the government using Twitter. That fact that Elon Musk proposed to charge them fees may be good or bad for Twitter.”
Steven Mas, another senior at WJPS, said, “They should pay for it since they get so much free advertising on the platform already, so yeah I think it’s a good idea because then it wouldn’t be free self-promotion.”
