How valuable are SAT scores in admitting students into college? Previously, the test had been accused of putting students from minority and lower-income groups at a disadvantage. The University of California stated in a 2020 report that standardized tests were practical to test students’ potential in these backgrounds.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) stated that it would require SAT scores to be submitted once again for upcoming applicants. This would be the first notable university to get rid of the suspension of the requirement, which was first put into place due to the pandemic preventing or hindering many students from taking the exams. Will MIT stay an outlier, or will more colleges follow this decision?
WJPS junior Dayssy Acuahuitl said, “I feel like it’s understandable why they would mandate SAT scores again. However, I don’t think it is fair for my [grade] since we were off of in-person education for about a year and a half.”
WJPS senior Eltzy Galindo said, “Although I am glad to be graduating the year where most colleges have decided to be test-optional in their admissions, I feel the students in the next few graduating years have also been affected by COVID and should also have the option.”
