With all the NYC public school system changes because of the coronavirus pandemic, parent-teacher conferences have been virtual these past two years.
Parent-teacher conferences were initially held in the school, and the students’ parents would sign up for a five minute appointment.
In 2020, virtual parent-teacher conferences were held through Google Meet, and parents would sign up for an appointment.
From then on, parent-teacher conferences were held through the same site. Even when classes started in person for this school year, they were still held online.
WJPS teacher Ms. Papazoglou said, “I actually feel it’s okay either way. Sometimes when parents are working a whole day, it’s hard.”
She also said, “I remember when I would have to go for my own children. As long as I meet with the parents, I’m happy.”
WJPS teacher Ms. Kontos said, “I prefer online so parents can feel more comfortable meeting and speaking with their child’s teacher in a shared in-person space. However, I feel like there should be a choice to see what way works best for everyone.”
Additionally, the New York City Department of Education stated that, “Meetings with parents/caregivers may, upon request, occur in-person on a mutually agreeable date and time.”
Ultimately, if a parent wants to contact a teacher to meet at the school, they may contact their students’ teacher.
