TikTok’s popularity came from providing users with an infinite amount of videos tailored to their interests. However, for most of the platform’s life, these videos were capped at a maximum of 60 seconds long to prevent users from losing interest.

However, growing competition between social media platforms has caused TikTok to make some changes, meaning that users can now post videos that are up to 10 minutes long.

Due to TikTok’s massive growth in popularity, rival platforms introduced their take on the TikTok formula. This includes YouTube’s Shorts and Instagram’s Reels, which are offered alongside the platforms’ usual lengthy format, something TikTok did not have.

As a result, allowing 10-minute videos enable TikTok to compete with these other platforms that allow longer videos for years.

This is not the first time TikTok has increased the limit, as the maximum video length was increased to three minutes last July.

A senior at WJPS, Nick Martinez, said, “I don’t think it’s a good idea because TikTok will become more distracting.”

Lianna Zuvich, another senior at WJPS, said, “I think that’s a really stupid feature. If I wanted to watch a 10-minute video, I would just go to YouTube.”
