As of recently, Russia has been having disputes with Ukraine due to a variety of reasons, one of them being Ukraine wanting to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is a military alliance that was established in 1949 by the United States and several other countries.
Russia’s president Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” which was an invasion that started last month in Ukraine. During the attacks, thousands of civilians have perished and many have had to flee their home country in fear and panic.
Mr. Mengani, WJPS social studies teacher, stated “The U.S. is already involved, because we’ve deployed troops to Poland and we’re providing weapons and other types of aid to Ukraine. I hope it doesn’t come to the U.S. fighting with Russia, but if any NATO country is attacked, other countries will be forced to respond which is another way the U.S. could potentially be involved.”
The principal of WJPS, Dr. Werner said, “If Ukraine becomes part of NATO, it’s our responsibility to defend them even if they don’t get accepted. We still have a humanitarian responsibility to the citizens of Ukraine, and situations like this one make us as Amercians take part in what we believe in to help protect democracies.”
