When you think of an American marriage, some may think of the husband in a suit and tie, the wife in a beautiful dress, and the kids enjoying their wonderful dinner. This is a fake or unrealistic American marriage.
The real American marriage involves lies, love, emotions, and friendship, or at least the novel An American Marriage by Tayari Jones does.
The book follows three different characters and their thoughts throughout the years of one of the characters: Roy. He was sentenced to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. While Roy was in prison, many things changed.
Celestial, Roy’s wife, has been getting closer with her longtime friend Andre. While all three characters grow, they must learn to keep going and to move forward with whatever pain they may have.
The whole plot of An American Marriage is intelligent and important. It brings to light how many people of color are incarcerated for crimes they don’t commit.
It also shows how time can change many things and how important time is.
Overall, this novel is worth five out of five pages. It was a great novel and it’s good if you want something that is dramatic, but realistic.
