There are many who advocate for climate change action and rightfully address the crisis with the urgency it warrants but oddly, few of these people seem to have given thought to what is a huge factor to the cause and an achievable solution for it: replacing industrial farms and slaughterhouses and instead producing meat from plants.
According to the food production journal Nature Food, the dairy, meat, and feedstock industry is responsible for almost 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, its rival being all forms of transportation combined. Making meat from plants instead of the traditional methods like processing meat in factories we use now can reduce emissions massively while providing consumers with a comparable product.
With the support of the government, the research and development for these alternative meats can be made cheaper and healthier than animal products, and we can enjoy meat guilt-free.
Alvin Zeng, a WJPS senior said, “Making meat from plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions sounds like a good efficient idea.”
Another WJPS senior, Somiah Singh, said, “If the plant meat tastes very similar to actual meat then I think most people would be open to trying it.”
