Face Masks: What’s the Controversy?

Face+Masks%3A+What%E2%80%99s+the+Controversy%3F

The COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020 and shook the entirety of Earth’s population to the core. It shifted almost everyone’s life and we had to adapt to our new norm.

As a precautionary measure, society was asked to wear face masks to protect themselves and others. This relatively simple task seemed to be a very difficult thing for some Americans to wrap their minds around.

A study at the University of California revealed that “33,000 deaths [could’ve been] avoided if 95 percent of people wore masks in public.” Even with statistics similar to these, people still wouldn’t oblige to government mandates.

While most followed the mandate, some couldn’t wear it due to medical conditions, which is perfectly respectable. Others chose to ignore the request and didn’t wear a mask or they used alternatives.

The rest took a more subtle approach – wearing the mask on their chin.

Many Americans chose to wear their mask below their nose or on their chin. By wearing it this way, it defeated the purpose of stopping germs from spreading from their mouth and nose.

Now, it’s understandable that some lower their mask for a quick breather. It does get hard to breathe after a while depending on your physical exertion. However, wearing a mask incorrectly as an act of defiance is simply not justified.
