During the lockdown of the pandemic there has been an increase in handmade clothing, and more people are leaning towards the art making on clothing. Artists like Ella Emhoff create knitwear and Emily Dawn Long focuseing on dying jeans.
Recently a New York-based artist, Andrea Smith has taken an interest in creating designs using vintage denim painted with natural dyes.
Smith’s drawings are portrayed on denim with her own characters and different patterns. She uses natural dyes and mixes them with soy milk. She has stated how it leaves a beautiful permanent mark on them.
WJPS junior Nyla Briones stated, “I think it’s cool for people to change their clothes into something more unique and express their style.”
WJPS junior Yarelly Ramirez said, “Fashion has become really popular dring quarantine and people don’t know what to spend their time on, so they started making art. Art and fashion combined can show someone’s creativity through different forms and should be encouraged.”
It’s a great way for people to bring out their creative skill and try new things since it can get quite boring when you’re at home. Andrea Smith’s angelic illustrations are great examples of creating something different in fashion.
