Byleth, the protagonist of the role-playing game Fire Emblem: Three Houses, was recently released as a DLC fighter for Nintendo’s platform fighting game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
After Byleth’s announcement, many fans of the game took to Twitter and other social media platforms to complain about the character’s inclusion in the game. The main reason so many fans were upset is because Byleth is from the Fire Emblem series, a series well represented in Smash, and many fans wanted a new, ideally non-Nintendo (also known as third-party) character.
“I’m honestly really annoyed that Byleth was added. I’m a pretty big Fire Emblem fan, but enough is enough. Fire Emblem is now ten percent of the cast, which is just too much, especially because all of them are so similar and boring. I was really hoping Nintendo would represent some smaller third-party games. Byleth just shouldn’t have made the cut,” said World Journalism Preparatory School junior and Fire Emblem fan Joon Park.
WJPS freshman, Joseph Vera, stated, “I’m not a Fire Emblem fan, and I really don’t mind that they added Byleth. It’s not as big of a deal as people make it out to be.”
