Billie Eilish released a new song, “Everything I Wanted,” where she addresses a personal dream. With the lyrics often being misconceived, here are the reactions of WJPS students before and after being told the true meaning.
After hearing it for the first time, WJPS seventh grader Angelina Vasquez said, “Obviously it’s kinda sad. I think it’s about how she wanted something personal, I guess.”
WJPS sophomore Matteus Schemlke said, “I think it’s about how people think about what they want, but when they get it, it might not be as good as they thought. In the song, she said she got everything she wanted in her dream, but she thought it was a nightmare.”
In a Genius interview, Eilish explained that the song is based off of a dream where she took her life and nobody cared, referencing to the line, “Thought I could fly, so I stepped off the golden. Nobody cried, nobody even noticed.”
The cover art for this song is a vague drawing of the Golden Gate Bridge. She also explains that her brother, Finneas is always there for her and essentially saved her life.
When this was told, some students were shocked.
“I really didn’t think she would make a song like that. That meaning is really harsh, I didn’t think of that. In the words that she used, she kind of rephrased it to make it not seem like that, but it really was about that,” said Vasquez.
“That’s deep,” Schmelke stated.
