The scramble to become the Democratic candidate has seen some surprises, but it has also had some predictable nominees like Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren. However, in the past few days, a peculiar figure has emerged: Bill de Blasio.
Why? Who asked for this? I have personal opinions on de Blasio, but isn’t this all a huge joke? People have been predicting this, yet I am still in shock. De Blasio is not very well liked in his party: a Marist College poll found that 65% of Democrats would not be happy if he ran, and a Quinnipiac poll found he had a negative favorability.
Perhaps us New Yorkers are more kind-hearted towards de Blasio? It is funny until you realize about only 18% of New Yorkers would support his bid, according to another Quinnipiac poll. Numbers can be deceiving – 2016 taught us that – but it is clear here that de Blasio doesn’t a have a base of support larger than the elites in their penthouses south of 59th Street. That’s hardly enough to lead the way.
I will admit that I have no real purpose here. I am just questioning aloud why something so asinine can occur. I won’t even list my grievances with de Blasio, and the horrors of a de Blasio presidency, because such a scenario lays in de Blasio’s dreams.
