It was a big day for many baseball fans. America’s favorite pastime returned on April 3rd.
The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates kicked off this year’s season with a divisional battle. Following that game was another divisional battle between the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays. And for opening night, the New York Mets squared off against the Kansas City Royals in a rematch of the World Series.
Francisco Liriano went six strong innings while giving up three hits and striking out ten, leading the Pirates to their first win of season 4-1. Blue Jays’ shortstop, Troy Tulowitzki, hit a tape measure shot to his belt as the first homerun of the year, while Toronto’s ace, Marcus Stroman, went eight innings, giving up three runs and striking out five. This led to a 5-3 Toronto win.
The Royals won the rematch of the fall classics with Edinson Volquez of the Royals, leading the way with six innings of shutout ball. Closer, Wade Davis, closed the game with the Mets threatening with runners on third and first bases and striking out David Wright and Yoenis Cespedes.
“It was a good start to a hopeful great 2016 season with more entertaining baseball to come,” junior Ronald Baretela said.
