Gambling online has been prevalent for years now and has resulted in many state-issued laws in either allowing or restricting specific types of gambling.
Although it is illegal in the state of New York to gamble via casino games online, online sports betting has been legalized in New York for over a year.
Within this time, New York has been consistently shown to be one of the largest sports betting states with roughly 90% of the bettings being done online. Within the first week of 2023, New Yorkers placed roughly $400 million in college football bets according to New York Sports Day.
Online betting has only increased in usage, with celebrities endorsing individual sites such as DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars.
Depending on the website used, the minimum age can vary from 18 to 21.
WJPS senior, Giovanni Duran, stated “It’ll be interesting to see how things are enforced and restricted in a few years when I’m in their age demographic.”
WJPS teacher, Ms. Marks stated, “I’m particularly nervous about betting apps being legalized in New York and New Jersey in the future, as things are getting more and more popular, people are going to search for loopholes. The accessibility of online betting makes it so much easier for people to be prone to gamble.”
